• How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With by Rutherford and Neil
  This is the best book I’ve found for people with a new puppy. Very straightforward, easy to understand, and all about using good common sense.
• Building Blocks for Performance by Anderson & Libby
  Excellent book for exercises that help you learn to play with your dog, in order to build a strong bond that will carry into performance competition.
• The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell
  Pat McConnell has great stories, and also teaches you to understand your dog and train in a dog-appropriate manner.
• The Dog Listener by Jan Fennell 
  Jan teaches a successful, positive methodology that gives your dog a comfortable sense of his or her place in your pack (and thus assure "good", appropriate behavior).  

Golden Retriever Books

• Book of the Golden Retriever by Anna Nicholas
  This is an older book, but has great photos of influential Goldens
